Vodafone Betavine

9 February 2007 by Alex Laurie

In response to us mentioning Betavine during our turn to host the Carnival of the Mobilists Paul Walsh asked us to review and comment on it now that it is live

Daniel Appelquist explains what Betavine is here I guess our point about it being ‘open(ish)’ rather than open stems from Paul’s original comment about it being Open Source, and correcting himself to saying it is open for contributions and joining in.

So it’s not a SourceForge for mobile apps (which has some great mobile projects there such as the much mentioned WURFL). Where it differs is that the developers are not opening up their code for contributions, rather they are offering their applications up for collaborative testing and feedback. This is a good thing and I think if we were making consumer-facing mobile apps then we would want to contribute to and work with Betavine. We wish the Betavine project team success in this endeavour and hope it turns out some really useful applications. Perhaps worth a mention, as it overlaps with some of our ideas, is the current most popular (by download numbers) app, a GPS trail logger which also looks like it can geotag photos.
